Election Day

South Africa’s Election day history

Before the 1994 Election day, South Africa’s history is a dark and dim looking grave of unfairness and white supremacy control. It was not always like that but eventually led up to a vicious battle of human rights violations and unfairness throughout the country including the fact that until 1994, elections were based on race and were not open to the entire country.

It was not always like that but eventually led up to a vicious battle of human rights violations and unfairness throughout the country including the fact that until 1994, elections were based on race and were not open to the entire country.

However, the negotiations between former president F. W. de Klerk and former president Nelson Mandela changed the face of the country beginning with the abolishing of the Apartheid regime and instilling non racial free and fair Election Day for all.

The negotiations

The negotiations between former president F. W. de Klerk and former president Nelson Mandela expanded over four years , beginning in 1990 with what was known as the unbanning of the ANC (African National Congress), as well as the SACP (South African Communist Party) of which former president Nelson Mandela was a huge part.

He has joined the SACP years before and had planned a coo against the government if things were not to change.

All went well and in 1994, run by the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission), the rainbow nation, South Africa had its first free and fair, non racial Election Day, where the ANC won majority votes.

A South African Election

(Read to the tune of “An English Country Garden”)

How many promises do you see
In a South African election?
How many lies do they televise
In a South African election?
Can I help but be confused
Quite upset and feeling used
Where were these guys when my lights were fused
Did they think to pass by
When the water ran dry
In-between their fine elections

How many parties do you know
In our upcoming elections?
If I put their names down neatly below
Could you make all the connections?
DA and ANC
Inkatha and NFP
PA, MF, UDM, APC
There’s the FN, the VP
And so many more to see
In our national elections
